PATRICK Summers isn't a statistics man but the animal hero has notched up some impressive figures.

In his quest to find homes for stranded animals, the 65-year-old has travelled more than 28,000km and dedicated 4400 hours to the task in 2 1/2 years.

"The stats are about average," the humble Lilydale man said.

His work with Animal Aid started after he was retrenched from his job as a furniture removalist.

"I tried to get a job for three months and I went to Centrelink," he said.

"They said I could do this, this or that, or I could volunteer."

The grandfather of four has never looked back and is still volunteering up to 30 hours a week.

"I enjoy it - I treat it like a job but there is no pressure and the people are really good," he said.

He also helps to give dogs a makeover at the Animal Aid Grooming Salon once a week, but sticks to simply washing and drying his four-legged friends.

"Who knows what they would look like I used to do (grooming) myself and I thought I looked strange," he said.

Mr Summers jumps in his car each week and collects homeless and unclaimed animals from all over the state, including Coldstream, Bairnsdale, Macedon, Geelong and Baw Baw.

He recently took a three-week break - his first since he started volunteering - and couldn't wait to hit the road again.

"I was thinking, 'Jeez, I miss this', so I think I'll be there for a while," he said.
