ACMACR403A Identify and Respond to Animal Behaviour Print E-mail

This unit of competency covers the process of identifying animals and their behaviour in the context of an animal control and regulation environment during day-to-day activities. It teaches participants to use reference materials and equipment to recognise and identify animals by species, breed, type and group. Participants will also be able to describe an individual animal using objective parameters.

The unit will develop the participant’s ability to assess, interpret, anticipate and respond appropriately to the behaviour of dogs, cats and large animals that they are likely to encounter during their employment, by reading physical and behavioural cues. This requires an appreciation of the owner animal environment triangle of effect that influence the expression of behaviour.

Participants will learn how to describe the temperament, health and wellbeing of animals and assess the physical and social environment where animals are kept. They will also receive guidelines regarding referral of behavioural and health issues to appropriate specialists. Statutory responses will be discussed as will all relevant organisational and legislative requirements.

During the course of this unit participants will apply knowledge and skills in a variety of contexts with depth in some areas. This includes handling animals utilising new handling skills, utilising identification equipment and applying problem solving skills to situations encountered. Competencies will be evaluated with a mixture of theoretical and practical activities that relate to the assessment of animal identification and behaviour using a variety of sources. Throughout the unit, OHS is paramount to ensure that participants are aware of potential risks and can act in order to mitigate them in their working life.
